How long does it take for a palm tree to die off?
How long does it take for a palm tree to die off when the temperature's below freezing? How do they survive in the south when the temps drop below freezing?
They don't generally grow in places where the temperature drops below freezing. However, they can sometimes be persuaded to if the temperature doesn't drop below freezing for all that much of the year. I'm thinking of my home town of Bournemouth on the south coast of England.
Some palms can grow there with no problems, assuming they've spent their youthful stages in heated greenhouse conditions. The winters are reasonably mild, thanks to the Gulf Stream, but it sometimes freezes. Very young palms wouldn't survive that but some mature ones can. Those are the ones the council plants in the town centre to impress the tourists.
